Summer reading
Incoming 6th graders: During the summer you should read at least one of the following novels:
You may purchase the novel of your choice at a local bookstore, borrow it from a friend or relative, or you may check it out from your local library. You will be required to take a test covering the contents of the book. You are also required to take at least one page of notes as you read the book. These notes will be turned in to the teacher on the day you take the test. Feel free to discuss the book with your parents as you are reading it.
It is also a requirement for each student to obtain a library card from the public library. You will be given a workbook with an application on page 12. Fill it out, tear it out of the workbook, and return it to one of the following libraries:

Incoming 7th graders: During the summer, all 7th grade students should read two novels:

Students will need to take the "Reading Counts" quiz on these novels during the first three weeks of school. This grade will also count towards their reading grade for the first quarter.
Parents: If your child has already passed a "Reading Counts" quiz for That was then, this is now, then they should select two of the novels in the second list above. We require students to take at least one page of notes for each novel while they are reading. Your child needs to read every day for twenty to thirty minutes. Continuing this reading habit is vital to a successful seventh grade year. This requirement is only the bare minimum and we hope that students read as much as possible. Additionally, you can help you children by discussing the books with them as they are reading. The required titles are available at local libraries or at any bookstore. A multiple-choice exam will be given the first week of school on both novels for a classroom grade. In addition, students may take the "Reading Counts" test on the computer to count towards the reading portion of their grade. We require students to take at least one page of notes for each novel wile they are reading.
